Where The Light Is:John Mayer Live In Los Angeles List Price: $9.98 Sale Price: $7.26 Average Rating: ![]() |

The much anticipated double CD of John Mayer in concert includes all the guitar player's hits, and the sound is unique. But the album is nothing more than a compilation of the different facets of Mayer, whose performance is divided into his three major stages. In the first part, he sings with the sole accompaniment of his acoustic guitar. Then he moves to a more jazz- and blues-inclined trio format (guitar, bass, and drums). Finally, Mayer joins his entire band with a rock sound. The truth is that the musician did not make the least effort to come up with new arrangements for his songs. If you have Mayer's previous live CDs, there's is not a single note here that you haven't heard before. --Ernesto Sánchez (People en Español ) Two CD set. This album captures the multi-Grammy Award winning, platinum selling singer and songwriter in the element where fans love him the most - Live on stage! The special concert includes three sets: an acoustic performance, a rare set with John Mayer Trio (with Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino), as well as a set featuring Mayer's full band, all recorded during the night of December 8, 2007 at the Nokia Theater in LA. This album features the quintessential performer as an acoustic songwriter, electric guitar slinger, bluesman and vocalist. Highlights include many of Mayer's biggest hits, 'Waiting On The World To Change' new interpretations of cover songs, 'Free Fallen' and a previously unreleased Mayer gem 'In Your Atmosphere'. |

Sid Caesar Collection - 3 Volume Gift Boxed Set [VHS] List Price: $39.95 Sale Price: $10.99 Average Rating: ![]() |

So Jackie Chan doesn't use stunt men? Big deal. In the 1950s, Sid Caesar and a peerless ensemble of character actors, including Imogene Coca, Carl Reiner, Howard Morris, and later, Nanette Fabray, dared something even more risky and dangerous: making an audience of millions laugh each week, 39 weeks a year, for 90 minutes without benefit of cue cards, teleprompters, or laugh track. It was the golden age of live television, and Your Show of Shows was the gold standard of sketch-variety series. This is the show to which all comedy writers aspired, and Caesar assembled an unprecedented dream team that included (though not at the same time) Neil Simon and his brother Danny, Mel Brooks, Larry Gelbart, Woody Allen, and Selma Diamond. The Sid Caesar Collection is a treasure trove of 18 vintage sketches from Your Show of Shows and Caesar's Hour. The exquisite pantomime The Clock, The German General, the movie parody From Here to Obscurity, and the uproarious This Is Your Story (with Howard Morris in his shining quarter-hour as Uncle Goofy) were previously featured in the 1973 compilation film Ten from Your Show of Shows. The rest have been virtually unseen since their original broadcasts. Husband-wife relations have come a long way since The Fur Coat, and The Haircuts, a goof on rock & roll, was perhaps square even then, but they are all still wonderfully and humanly crazy after all these years. Linking these sketches are newly filmed interviews with Caesar, Reiner, Morris, Simon, Gelbart, Allen, and Fabray, who recall the chaos of mounting a weekly live broadcast and the inspiration for these classic sketches. --Donald Liebenson |

Aristocrats (3pc) [VHS] List Price: $59.98 Sale Price: $20.00 Average Rating: ![]() |

At one point during The Aristocrats, the dutiful, devoted, yet rather dim husband of Louisa Lennox cannot find the word to describe the magnificent party they are attending. "Resplendent," his wife offers. That pretty much describes this impeccably mounted BBC miniseries. Based on the biography by Stella Tillyard, The Aristocrats vividly re-creates "a different world" that would eventually be shattered by rebellion and bloodshed. "The much pampered" Emily Lennox narrates her family's history, as tumultuous as it was charmed. The Lennox sisters, Caroline (Serena Gordon), Emily (Geraldine Somerville, and as an older woman, Sian Phillips), Louisa (Anne-Marie McDuff), and Sarah (Jodhi May), were of royal blood and they mixed with royalty. Part 1 chronicles elder daughter Caroline's "small rebellion" that tears her family apart. Against her father's wishes ("I would sooner let you sell fish in the street," he thunders), she marries for love Henry Fox, a politician who is 20 years older. Caroline is banished from the house and her sisters' lives. Part 2 charts the misfortunes of sister Sarah, who as a child was a favorite of the king and is later courted, but ultimately rejected, by his heir. She becomes "an inconvenient woman," scandalizing her family with her indiscretions. Part 3 makes the last reel of Gone with the Wind look like Singin' in the Rain as bittersweet reunions, sibling rivalries, death, infidelities, and revolution take their tragic toll. Originally broadcast on Mobil Masterpiece Theatre, The Aristocrats is presented on video in a three-volume set. Anglophiles will find it difficult not to take in all 246 minutes in a single sitting. But the peerless ensemble and rich production ensures rewarding repeat viewings. --Donald Liebenson A lavish true-life tale of love, betrayal, and political intrigue in Georgian England comes to video with Aristocrats, a six-part drama from the BBC. Based on the bestselling biography by Stella Tillyard, Aristocrats charts the tumultuous lives and loves of the four Lennox sisters, spirited daughters of the Duke of Richmond, great-granddaughters of King Charles II. The series features an impressive cast including Tony Award nominee Sian Phillips (The Age of Innocence, I, Claudius), Jodhi May (The Last of the Mohicans), and Diana Quick (The Big Sleep). The Lennox sisters are described by The Radio Times as "four women liberated before their time... the 18th century's very own 'It' girls." The eldest daughter, Caroline (Serena Gordon), was a headstrong individualist who eloped with a commoner politician more than 20 years her senior and was consequently cut off from the family for many years. Emily (Geraldine Somerville), the second sister, was a flirtatious beauty who set her heart on the Irish Lord Kildare. Much younger than her two older sisters, Louisa (Anne-Marie McDuff) was considered the darling of the family, marrying one of the richest men in Ireland and devoting her life to charitable causes. The very youngest sister, Sarah (Jodhi May), scandalized society with her many affairs, including a dalliance with King George III. Against all odds, the four privileged women manipulated the conventions of their times to get what they wanted and make their mark on history. |

Dexter: The Fourth Season List Price: $49.99 Sale Price: $21.49 Average Rating: ![]() |
|
Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 08/17/2010 Run time: 632 minutes Unfolding with tragic inevitability, Dexter's fourth season is a taut game of cat and mouse between Dexter (Emmy nominee Michael C. Hall) and Arthur Mitchell, "a very special kind of monster," unnervingly portrayed by John Lithgow in his Emmy and Golden Globe-winning performance. Whoever guest stars in seasons to come has a very hard act to follow. (Never mind all the blood, Mitchell's greeting, "Hello, Dexter Morgan," from the episode of the same name, will disturb your sleep.) But let's not forget Hall's consistently cutting-edge work. The Dexter saga has a rich back-story and mythology, but for those new to the series and lured to this season by Lithgow's justly celebrated performance, season 4 is a good place to start, because it represents something of a new beginning for Dexter himself. Married at the end of season 3, he is now dreaming of "having it all" as a husband and father, trying to juggle the demands of his job as a Miami Metro Police Department blood-spatter analyst, his new family, and his other calling as a serial killer. But he is more conflicted than ever. His new baby keeps him up nights, and the normally precise and methodical Dexter finds himself exhausted to the point of making mistakes in court. "Who knew life could get so unsimple?" he asks early on. Dexter and Mitchell are not the only characters harboring secrets. Some we can mention (Lieutenant Maria LaGuerta and Detective Angel Batista are in a relationship), but others we dare not even hint at (the episode "Hungry Man" has a doozy of a cliffhanger revelation). As the season unfolds, an incognito Dexter insinuates himself into Arthur's life and discovers disturbing parallels in their lives. Meanwhile, now-retired serial killer hunter Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine), who nearly uncovered Dexter's identity back in season 2, returns to ask for his help in catching the Trinity Killer. His reappearance upends the life of Dexter's sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), a homicide detective and Lundy's former lover. Debra has also been digging into the past of her late policeman father Harry (James Remar) and learns more about her twisted family tree. Disappointingly, interviews with Hall, Lithgow, and other cast members can be accessed only on a PC, but the DVD does contain episodes of Californication, Lock 'N Load, and The Tudors. --Donald Liebenson |

Follows the lives of a high school football coach, his family, and his players in a small Texas town that lives for the Friday night football game. Some televised dramas focus on families, others on singles and couples, but NBC's Friday Night Lights, among the finest shows of the decade, takes on an entire town. As with Sports Night, minimal enthusiasm for athletics presents no hindrance to enjoyment, just an interest in the concerns of Dillon, TX's populace, indelibly captured through authentic locations, handheld cameras, and naturalistic acting. If the off-shoot of creator Peter Berg's feature film doesn't look like most primetime programs, the cinematic score from Austin's Explosions in the Sky contributes to the big-screen impression. Since the first season, Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his wife, Tami (Connie Britton), now Dillon High principal, remain constants as they guide their charges--including 17-year-old daughter Julie (Aimee Teegarden)--through games, classes, and beyond. Where Jason Street and Smash Williams began as major players, they fade from view in the third as they figure out their post-grad futures. Instead, big-hearted garage-rocker Landry (Observe and Report's Jesse Plemons) emerges as the heart of the show, while his best friend, Matt (Zach Gilford), reaches out to his estranged mother, Shelby (Kim Dickens), for help when his grandmother’s deteriorating mental condition becomes too much to bear. If everyone has financial struggles of some kind, new quarterback JD. McCoy (Jeremy Sumpter) shares no such concerns. By the end of the season, however, his controlling father, Joe (D.W. Moffett), will go too far. And after a misguided move into criminal intrigue during the second year, Lights avoids any similar missteps this time around, and the entire cast rises to the occasion, including Taylor Kitsch (Riggins), Minka Kelly (Lyla), and Adrianne Palicki (Tyra), who portrays the show's trickiest character, a self-obsessed senior who takes advantage of Landry whenever it suits her needs. Extras include deleted scenes and insightful commentary from writer/producer Jason Katims. --Kathleen C. Fennessy |

Christmas Lights: a Brief History
Those of us who celebrate Christmas with a tree in our homes usually choose to light it in one way or another. But did you ever stop to wonder how we got started lighting our trees?
The first lights on Christmas trees were candles that were attached to the tree branches with either melted wax or pins that held them in place. As you can imagine, many trees went up in flames due to this practice. One might guess that at that time, many families would have kept buckets of water nearby to extinguish the impending fire. In the homes of the wealthy, it was often times the job of a servant to watch the tree during the evening hours and be prepared to extinguish a fire, if necessary. As a result of this eminent risk, most trees were decorated on December 24th and promptly removed following Christmas day. This must have been a lot of work for such a short viewing of the tree!
In 1882, the technology of Thomas Edison was used to hand wire 80 red, white, and blue lights onto the first electronically lighted Christmas tree. It took a few years for this idea to catch on. When President Grover Cleveland set up an electronically lighted Christmas tree in the White House in 1895, finally the idea began to get some publicity. The general public realized that there was a better way to light their Christmas trees.
By the close of the 1800's, General Electric Company began manufacturing and selling hand blown bulbs that were ready to wire into a string to be put on a Christmas tree. Since the average homeowner was not well educated about how electricity worked in those days, a new industry sprung up of "wiremen" who were hired to wire the bulbs together to light the family tree.
In the early 1900's, some big department stores began setting up large illuminated trees to attract customers. And attract customers it did! Everyone wanted to have a tree at home like the stores were capable of putting on display. In the early 1900's, the cost of such a tree was in excess of $300. That price included a generator and the wireman's service. By today's standard, that cost would be equivalent to more than $2,000.
In 1903, the American Eveready Company developed and marketed the first Christmas light set, which had screw in bulbs and a plug in wall socket, since many homes had been "wired" for electricity by this time. Then in 1908, entrepreneur Ralph Morris came up with the idea of taking the lights from an old telephone switchboard, wiring them on a Christmas tree, and running a battery as a power source.
But the individual who made the biggest difference in electric Christmas tree lights, and who made them affordable to the general public, was Albert Sadacca. Albert's family manufactured imitation birds in a wicker cage that lit up with electricity. At the age of 15, Albert had the idea of making electric Christmas lights. His parents thought it sounded like a good idea, and the family gave it a go. The first year, they only sold 100 sets of lights. The following year, Albert decided to color the bulbs in red, green, and other colors. This idea really took off. Albert Sadacca went on to become the head of a NOMA Electric Company, a multi-million dollar corporation. Headed up by Albert and his two brothers, Henri and Leon, the trio formed the largest Christmas lighting company in the world prior to 1965.
Today, yet another revolution in Christmas lighting is occurring. The newest offering in holiday lights are LED lights that use significantly less electricity than incandescent bulbs and burn out less frequently. With the trend toward energy conservation and "going green", LED lights are rapidly gaining in popularity. Though they are more expensive than traditional incandescent light sets, one way to change over all your holiday lights is to buy one new set of LED lights per year until everything is changed over.
Christmas tree lighting technology will continue to change as time goes on. History shows us that we've made many improvements in the last few centuries. Only time will tell what's in store for holiday lights in years to come!

Lights set into concrete sidewalk?
I seen a sidewalk that had small lights set right into the concrete. They were real small and changed colors. Kinda fiber optic looking. There were alot of them all through the concrete, not just one or 2.
Anyone know what they are and where to get them? Ive called places like Lowes, Home Depot and a few lighting stores..no one has heard of them.
I was involved with something similar in Houston about 30 years ago.It was a driveway (black concrete) and every so many feet we left voids across for clear brick and used directional lighting. It kinda looked like a runway lighting system. This would be a speciality item from a commercial lighting store.
Good Luck
